How to stock a small toy counter
If you run a stationery shop, a kirana counter, a salon waiting area or a weekend market stall, a small toy display is one of the easiest add-ons to justify. No refrigeration, no expiry date, very little space.
Here is how we would build a first display without over-committing.
Work in three price bands
The single biggest mistake on a small counter is stocking one price point. You want a cheap impulse tier, a workhorse tier and one or two anchors.
- Under Rs. 50, the impulse tier. Slime tubs and small novelty items sit here. These are what a child asks for at the till while a parent is already paying for something else.
- Rs. 50 to Rs. 100, the workhorse. Friction and pull-back cars live in this band, and this is where most of your unit volume will come from.
- Rs. 100 and up, the anchor. Musical and light-up items, truck sets, larger vehicles. You sell fewer, but they lift the perceived quality of the whole display and they rescue the birthday-gift customer who walked in with no plan.
Buy boxes, not singles
Multi-piece boxes are the whole point of a counter display. A 12-piece or 16-piece box arrives sorted, fills a tray in one go, and gives you a natural reorder unit. It also means you are not hand-picking individual designs at a stage when you do not yet know what your customers reach for.
A starter mix
For a first display, something along these lines covers all three bands without tying up much capital:
- Two slime or squeeze boxes for the impulse tray
- Two mixed-model car boxes for the middle
- One rattle or plush box if younger children come through
- Two or three anchor pieces at the top of the range
Placement beats range
Put the display at child eye level, within arm's reach of where people queue. A toy counter at adult eye level behind glass sells a fraction of what the same stock does at knee height beside the till.
Restocking
Track which band empties first over your first month, then weight the second order towards it. Most counters find one band moves two to three times faster than the others, and it is rarely the one they expected.
